New data shows that while international visitor arrival numbers in Mexico were down compared to pre-pandemic levels, those who did enter the country in July spent more money than they did in 2019.

According to Mexico News Daily, Mexico’s national statistics agency Inegi announced that an estimated 3.38 million international visitors came to Mexico in July 2021, a 19 percent decline from the 4.16 million foreign arrivals reported during July 2019.

Canada’s largest airline currently has no plans to use the new Mexico City airport, which is under construction at a México state Air Force base and scheduled to open in March 2022.

Air Canada’s sales director for Latin America and the Caribbean told a virtual press conference that the airline hasn’t yet considered using the new airport because it is still being built and there are unanswered questions about its viability.

Renewal of aviation safety rating threatened by airport deficiencies

Mexico’s capacity to return to a first tier aviation safety rating from the United States government could be hampered in the short term by deficiencies at 19 airports operated by a state-owned company.

The United States’ Federal Aviation Administration downgraded Mexico’s safety rating from Category 1 to Category 2 in May after finding that it doesn’t meet standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization, a specialized agency of the United Nations. The move prevents Mexican airlines from adding new flights to the United States.

Air Canada plans to reactivate Mexico flights September 7

Air Canada has announced plans to reactivate flights to Mexico on September 7, the date the Canadian government has set to reopen borders to fully vaccinated travelers.

The airline will run 22 weekly flights to Mexico City: two daily from Toronto, five weekly from Vancouver and three weekly from Montreal. Flights from Quebec City to Cancún, Quintana Roo, will restart on December 4, with two per day.

The U.S. State Department on Friday raised the travel warnings to two states in Mexico while downgrading four other Mexican destinations.

The U.S. raised its warnings from Level 2 (“Exercise Increased caution” to Level 3 (“Reconsider travel”) for Baja California and Guanajuato. Baja California, in particular, is a heavy tourist destination that includes Tijuana, Mexicali and Ensenada.
