MONTERREY, Mexico (AP) — The winner of the election triumphed largely thanks to his glamorous but off-message YouTube influencer wife, and their appearances with music stars. the loser saw her chances fade after video emerged of her in a coaching session with NXIVM sex cult leader Keith Raniere.

It sounds like an election that could have happened in some parts of California, but it was the governorship race in Mexico’s northern border state of Nuevo Leon that proved the most revelatory of Sunday’s congressional, state and local races.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s Morena party saw its dominance in Mexico City crumble in Sunday’s midterms, as some in the country’s educated classes turned against the government.

Having previously ruled 12 of Mexico City’s 16 districts, Morena looks like it will take home few more than half of them this week.

Fed up with entrenched corruption, many educated Mexicans voted for the populist Lopez Obrador in 2018 but have since been put off by his nationalism and bombastic rhetoric. The divide in Mexico City encapsulates that of the country, as the working class eastern part of the city backed the president’s party, while the richer western side voted for the opposition.

Mexico City (CNN)Mexico’s ruling political coalition is projected to lose its qualified majority in the lower house of Congress after a poor showing in midterm elections Sunday, according to initial figures released by the government.

The defeat will prevent President Andrés Manuel López Obrador from passing major legislative and constitutional reforms without the help of opposition parties. However, his ruling coalition is still expected to maintain a simple majority.
