The United States will send up to an additional 8.5 million coronavirus vaccine doses to Mexico, as both countries continue to grapple with a spike in infections fuelled by the highly contagious Delta variant.

Speaking on Tuesday, a day after holding a phone call with US Vice President Kamala Harris, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said he expected most adults living along the border with the US will have received their second dose of the vaccine within a month.

The United States will send additional COVID-19 vaccine doses to Mexico, the White House said Monday, after the Mexican government said it would ask for millions more shots to combat a surge in cases.

Vice President Kamala Harris spoke by phone with Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. The two leaders discussed the flow of migrants coming across the U.S.-Mexico border, as well as the pandemic, according to a readout of the call.

Canada and Mexico imported millions of doses of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine and offered them to the public without health officials properly inspecting the operations of the U.S. manufacturer, according to inspection records and the regulators involved.

The Baltimore plant belonging to Emergent BioSolutions Inc (EBS.N) was producing vaccines for both AstraZeneca Plc (AZN.L) and Johnson & Johnson (JNJ.N) under a $628 million U.S. government contract.

On one recent morning, however, hundreds of workers from the factories known as maquiladoras were waved across the border into San Diego, without visas or passports, and rolled up their sleeves to be vaccinated. An hour later, they were back on production lines in Tijuana.

Mexico City and México state will switch to high risk orange on the coronavirus stoplight map on Monday as the third wave of the pandemic continues to worsen.

Mexico City official Eduardo Clark said Friday that the capital will remain at the high risk level until at least August 1. México state Governor Alfredo del Mazo said that state will also be orange next week.

A third coronavirus wave fueled by the highly contagious delta variant is battering two of Mexico’s most popular tourist destinations on opposite coasts, Los Cabos in the Pacific and Cancun on the Caribbean.

In Cancun, cases have soared to a point where the Hard Rock hotel has set aside two floors for guests with symptoms. Some hotels say they offer discounts for those in quarantine until they’re no longer contagious.
