Mexico Homicide Cases Rise by 15 Percent in 2018

MEXICO CITY — Mexico’s public safety agency says homicide cases rose by 15 percent in 2018.

Government figures released this week show prosecutors opened 28,816 investigations in 2018, compared to 25,036 the year prior.

Each case may involve more than one victim, so the total number of homicides is likely to be higher.

The increase was led by dramatic rises in violence in parts of the country like the Caribbean coast state of Quintana Roo.
