cast vote mexicoMEXICO CITY — Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto of the ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) on June 9th called on Congress to approve the laws to regulate the National Anti-corruption System (SNA), which seeks to introduce stronger institutional checks and balances, along with coordination mechanisms, to better prevent and sanction entrenched corruption practices. The call came in rather late, as the constitutional deadline to pass said laws – May 28th – was not met. The sudden change in the president’s public discourse was an echo of voters’ message in the recent gubernatorial elections.
