Each morning, we will bring you an assortment of op-ed pieces from major Mexican dailies.

La Jornada

Clase Política, Miguel Ángel Rivera, “El Informe de Calderón:” Felipe Calderón’s final state of the union address was well-received, particularly among members of the PAN, as was his critique of the PRD when he said that president-elect Peña Nieto needed support.  The leader of the CCE, Gerardo Gutiérrez, said that Calderón’s administration left job and infrastructure growth as well as macroeconomic stability as its legacies. PRD leaders say that his address explained why the PAN came in third in the presidential election, and the secretary general Alejandro Sánchez said that Calderón should be ashamed of himself because his administration led to the PRI’s return to Los Pinos…While a PRD senator, Alejandro Encinas, warned that there would be mobilizations, other members of the PRD such as Marcelo Ebrard and the governor elect of Tabasco, Arturo Núñez, have said that although they do not agree with the TEPJF’s ruling, they will accept the ruling and follow the law.

Excelsior

Jorge Fernández Menéndez, “La honestidad de Felipe Calderón:” In this op-ed Fernández Menéndez  explains why he thinks Felipe Calderón’s legacy will be positive, saying that most president’s would not launch an all-out attack on organized crime when criminals control large swaths of the country and when institutions are weak.  He says that most people will argue that Calderón’s legacy will not be positive because of the many people who died in the war against organized crime, he says they have a point, but that fighting the criminal groups is more important because of their dictatorship over society, and says that to some degree the next administration will not be able to abandon the fight.  Regarding the economy he says that the financial management of the nation has been noticeable since the crisis of 2008 because Mexico has sustained growth for more than two years, with a manageable deficit and with substantial reserves.  He concludes by saying that, above all else, Calderón has been honest with himself, and with the people, which he says is not a small matter.
