Jorge Fernández Menéndez, “El atentado:” May 2008 military intelligence warned President Calderón that the Zetas were going to attempt to assassinate him on a trip to Tamaulipas, security forces were able to abort the menace and the President never told the story until his 50th birthday party last weekend, and Fernández Menéndez says that he is telling this story now so as to warn the next President… Various functionaries in the Calderón government have been assassinated, or have suffered assassination attempts, over the past six years, and these, Fernández Menéndez says, should remind politicians who lack the political will to fight organized crime that it is necessary because of the damage which organized crime can create.
