63 Mexican and 13 international human rights organizations (under the umbrella group, the National Campaign against Forced Disappearances) have asserted that the levels of violence will rise, as will violations of individual human rights, with a PRI presidency. They predict that Calderon’s security strategy will be continued under Peña Nieto and made more aggressive and that consequently there will be more violence. They point to the PRI’s past human rights abuses during their years in power, and to the increase in “forced disappearances” of human rights workers over the past year as compared with the previous five years.
