Former governor of Tamaulipas (1999-2004), Tomás Yarrington, accepted millions of dollars in bribes from drug cartels and invested money in real estate in Texas, according to federal prosecutors in the United States on two confiscation orders that were presented Tuesday.
Although Yarrington has not yet received a criminal charge against him, documents presented to authorities show that when he was a public officer he received “millions of dollars in payment” from drug cartels and “various extortion or bribery schemes.”
During this time as governor, Yarrington also became involved in various business deals to “become a great real estate investor through various money laundering mechanisms,” according to the documents presented at Corpus Christi. The other confiscation case was presented in San Antonio.
