As Mexico’s first female presidential candidate, Josefina Vázquez Mota faces many challenges. Although the candidate of the ruling PAN [National Action Party] wasn’t President Felipe Calderón’s choice, Mota defeated competitors in the party’s primary and emerged as its nominee. Currently trailing Enrique Peña Nieto in the polls, she took time out last week to speak with The Washington Post’s Lally Weymouth. Excerpts:
What is your pathway to winning?
We have a real possibility of winning, because I have a trajectory that comes from civil society.
