Reforma
- Templo Mayor: A new piece of information on the events that led to the rupture of PRI with Elba Esther Gordillo; as elements of the PGR pay a “follow-up” visit to former president Vicente Fox in his ranch, speculation has risen over Fox and his alleged ties to PRI as he has shown sympathy toward Peña Nieto’s presidential campaign; PAN’s Isabel Miranda de Wallace continues to receive attacks from within her own party due to her libertarian views on abortions, gay marriage, and children adoption by homosexual couples. These and more stories on today’s editorial:

El Universal
- Bajo Reserva: a public discussion between the five commissioners of Cofetel (Federal Telecommunications Commission) was sparked by the debate on new television concessions. The PRD still wants to support Alejandra Barrales as a candidate to run for Senate, both as a way to compensate her for her loss against Mancera and, some say, to avoid Dolores Padierna (wife of René Bejarano) from obtaining the position. The U.S. Embassy in Mexico received instructions directly from Washington, D.C. to take a more direct line of action with Mexican authorities in regards to protecting the rights of journalists and combatting human smuggling. Jornada
- Clase Política, “Coalición verde”: The PRI’s permanent commission has ratified its alliance with the PVEM in the wake of the Panal’s expulsion from the coalition. The PRI has expanded the terms of its coalition with the PVEM and they will not compete jointly in the Chamber of Deputies as well as in the Senate. The PRI has also backed Beatriz Paredes Rangel as a candidate for the ‘Jefatura’ or governorship of Mexico City while strongly criticizing the federal government’s response to the recent droughts that have affected several states in the country.

Excelsior
- Jorge Fernández Menéndez, “Lo privado, lo público, lo secreto”: Fernández Menéndez states that while everyone has a right to their own private lives, he believes that private matters are relevant when it comes to the lives of the politicians that govern or aspire to govern. When politicians reveal certain aspects of their private lives or when certain aspects are revealed to the public by others, they cannot be hidden as they serve to prove a perspective into who really are the people who wield power over us; such as the revelation that Enrique Peña Nieto sired two illegitimate children at around the same time.

- Leo Zuckermann, “Obama al alza”: President Obama’s probability of being reelected has slowly increased according to the strengthening of the U.S. economy, states Zuckermann. Barack Obama’s ratings peaked after the death of Osama Bin Laden, yet they fell as the economy slumped. As the economy has regained its strength so has President Obama who has also been bolstered by chaotic fighting within the Republican Party. The Republicans have recently seen fierce fighting between its potential candidates for the presidency, many of whom have risen in the ratings only to fall behind.

Milenio
- Trascendió: President Felipe Calderón received the Global Statesman Award at Davos, a prize additional to the presidency of the G20 which he now holds. After the award, Mexico now holds the global statesman, the richest man (Carlos Slim), the best mayor (Marcelo Ebrard) and even the most wanted criminal El Chapo Guzmán.

- Ciro Gómez Leyva , “Son malas noticias para ella y pésimas para el PRI”: By the end of 2011, it seemed likely that the PRI would retake Mexico City in the upcoming elections and that Beatriz Paredes would be the city’s new governor. However, less than a month into 2012, the polls show a dramatic fall for the PRI as the leading candidate for the capital’s government is the leftist coalition’s Miguel Angel Mancera. Mancera currently leads with 43%, followed by Paredes at 16% and the Panista Isabel Wallace at 13%. The notion that the peñanietista would overtake the capital has now disappeared.
