US July ’09 Trade With Canada, Mexico Falls 28% -DoT Report

Surface trade between the U.S. and its North American Free Trade Agreement partners Canada and Mexico fell 28% in July, continuing a trend of falling trade among the countries during the economic downturn.

The latest drop was the seventh consecutive month with a year-over-year decline of greater than 27%, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics of the U.S. Department of Transportation.

U.S.-Canada surface transportation trade totaled $31 billion in July, down 34% from a year earlier, while U.S.-Mexico surface trade fell 17% to $20.5 billion. Illinois led all states as the largest trading partner with Canada, while Texas was the largest trading partner with Mexico.
